7 Facts That The Shape Of Your Face Can Reveal

Physiognomy, the ‘science’ of reading faces and predicting scientists have long discarded the character of a person. However, some psychologists say that there is surely some link between the features of a person’s face and the personality associated with them. Carmen E, Lefevre from the University College London has emphasized that appearance is not only the product of genes and hormones but, one’s lifestyle as well.

The shape of your face, the wrinkles, cheekbones or even the way you pose to a camera can tell some aspect of your nature. Find out the seven facts that our faces show.

1. The Face.

Various scientists have observed that there is a connection between the shape of your face and dominance. Keith Welker, from the University of Colorado Boulder, studied the association between the ratio of the width and height of the soccer players’ faces and the number of goals they made. They found that higher the ratio higher was the dominating factor.

  • Measure the length your forehead and the distance between your eye and the upper lip. Find the ratio between the former and latter.

Lower the ratio, higher is the dominance factor. Abraham Lincoln had a ratio of about 1.93.

2. The Nose

In 2013, the Journal of Craniofacial Surgery studied the photos of 1,700 people. The researchers were able to pin down 14 different shapes of noses. To each type, they could associate a particular personality trait. They found that the bigger the size of the nose, the more assertive the person is. These people are more likely to be perfectionists.

Not only was the size of noses studied, but also the shape. The shape of the nose tip revealed that people with large nose tips are more likely to be investors and financiers. On the other hand, people with small nose tips seem to be casual with their money.

3. Cheekbones.

Perhaps this is the most observed feature of a face. A woman finds a person with prominent cheekbones very intimidating. A study from the University College London reveals that men with a high level of testosterone have thick cheekbones. This hormone is directly linked with dominance and aggression.

There is no doubt why the film industry gives the roles of villains, rebels and dominating characters to people with rough facial features.

4. Wrinkles

A study by the Department of Psychology, Humboldt- University, Berlin showed that the wrinkles on a person’s face reveal about their personality. The muscles we use to smile are different than the muscles we use to show anger. The most used emotions have a marked effect on our facial features even when we are not smiling or frowning. It is like peeking into the history of a person.

If you have ‘Crow’s feet’ at the corners of your lips and eyes, it suggests that you are very optimistic. You often smile and laugh which is reflected well on your face. On the other hand, a crease of the forehead in between the eyebrows can mean that you have a serious aura around you.

5.Profession

The way you take a selfie can determine your profession. A study by the scientists from the University of South Australia found out that engineers, chemists, and mathematician often turn their right cheek to the camera and artists and psychologists turn their left cheek to the camera.

The study also found out that the way you pose also depends on your gender. Women often turn their left side towards the camera. Some psychologists suggest that people find the left side of their face more attractive. This is because the left side of our body is controlled by the right side of the brain which is associated with emotions.

6. Selfies.

study by the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore studied 123 selfies taken from Sina Weibo, a Chinese microblogging site. The study found a remarkable association between the way you take a selfie and your personality traits. Neurotic or unstable people tend to make pouts and take their selfies from a high angle. They try to show dominance in their selfies, while friendly people prefer to take their selfies from low angles.  People who are open and joyous try to give positive vibes through their pictures

7. The Twin Study.

It is not always about the heredity, but, also the lifestyle that defines one’s nature. Even the identical twins, which are impossible to distinguish from each other show noticeable differences as they age. Depending on the lifestyle a person leads, people develop a kind of impression on their faces which can clearly show what the person has gone through and what we should expect from them.

However, this is not always true. Serial killers and psychopaths can too have angelic faces.

Be careful.

Alexander Todorov, professor of psychology at Princeton University, emphasised that we should not judge people immediately from their first impression as they can often be deceiving. This can be explained by a phenomenon called the halo effect, a stereotype which falsely relates peoples’ appearance with their behavior. We often think that beautiful people are kind and smart.

Todorov, in his experiment, asked his students to assess the appearance of different pictures. The students rated the people with child-like facial features as fragile, naive, sincere and kind. People with asymmetric and gloomy faces were rated as unfriendly and unsympathetic personalities.

Quite often we find that our first impression about a person was just a deception. Seemingly nice people turn out to be evil in the end, while those who we find unappealing in the beginning, turn out to be very friendly. Remember the adage: Do not judge a book by its cover.

The Criminals

The three people in the above picture may seem friendly and innocent to you. But, did you know that they are among the most notorious criminals in the world? Ted Bundy has been charged with rape and murder cases. Rosemary West is one of the vicious female serial killers, and Jeremey Meeks is known as the most handsome criminal in the USA. However, people can change. After Jeremy got released from the prison, he started to live like a peaceful person. He has made a success for himself in the fashion industry.
