We all have a  pet sleeping position which gives us the perfect sleep we want. While some people like to sleep on their backs, some like to sleep on their sides.  Whatever our comfy position, there are times when we suffer from some ailment, and then we find it’s nearly impossible to sleep.

It is important to know that sleeping in a particular way may relieve or intensify certain health issues. University researchers and physicians have discovered that conditions like sleep apnea, PMS, or headaches can be alleviated by changing the sleeping position.

1. PMS

 

When suffering from PMS, keep a pillow under your knees if you like to sleep on your back. This will reduce some pain in your back. However, the best way to sleep would be to sleep like a baby is curled up in the womb. Sleep on your side, bend and raise your knees as much possible as you can.

2. Back Pain

Back pain is caused when our spine is not in its proper position. There are many factors that contribute to it. However, to relieve some pain try not to arch your spine while sleeping. Sleep on your back and tuck a small pillow under your knees. This will ensure that your spine doesn’t arch and may relieve some pressure on your back.

3. Neck  Pain and Headaches

Also called cervical back pain, neck pain is very common among people. If you sleep on your back use a small round pillow. If you sleep on your sides, use a flat and soft pillow. 4. Jaw Pain

TMJ or temporomandibular disorder is in which people suffer from jaw pain. If you are having such a problem, avoid sleeping face down. It can exacerbate the pain. Try to sleep on your back with your face facing the ceiling. If you grit your teeth, practice parting your teeth with mouth closed.

5. Tight shoulder

If you have a habit of compressing your shoulders while sleeping, you will find them quite stiff in the morning. Try to avoid compressing the shoulders or sleep on your back instead. If the blood and fluids in your joints don’t flow properly, it causes soreness and fatigue leading to inflammation in the shoulders.

6. Heartburns

 

Heartburns are caused when the acids in our stomach try to rise into the oesophagus. Avoid sleeping immediately after eating food. Keep your body upright for some time before going to sleep or use some pillows to elevate your body. This will keep the acids in your stomach from rising.

7. Sciatica or Leg Pain

If you feel tingling, numbness or pain in your legs, then you are suffering from sciatica, a medical condition caused when the nerves in our hip region get affected. To relieve the pain in the leg, sleep on your back and tuck a pillow under your knees. Make sure your heels and bottom lie on your bed.

8. Sleep Apnea

Snoring is caused by sleep apnea, a medical condition in which our tongue falls back and blocks the windpipe while we are sleeping. People suffering from sleep apnea always feel tired and sleepy. If you are suffering from the same, avoid sleeping on your back. Sleep on your sides so that the tongue doesn’t fall back.
